Drum dryers with integrated cooling consist of two tubes pushed one inside another. Whilst the drying is taking place in the inside tube, the dried and still warm product passes through the outer tube for cooling, and is cooled using ambient air in the counter-flow principle.

The use of a twin-shell dryer as a single unit is recommended by sand dryers or Sand drying & cooling machine manufacturers whenever the sand has to be cooled immediately after drying. The drying then takes place in the inner rotary tube. The dried and warm material flows from the inner rotary tube into the outer shell and is transported back by appropriately shaped lifting scoops and guide vanes and the material is cooled by the counter-current flow of incoming cold ambient air.
